It depends on the purpose of the work.

Yes, students should have useful homework each night.

Gary Record said...

Yes, when it's meaningful.

Kids can do homework whenever they get home. Does not have to be at night.

Depends on the quality of the assignment.

Yes, there needs to be a safe place to learn at home.

Yes, if the material is relevant or needs to be reviewed.

It depends on what it is....

Is it meaningful?

Yes, but only to practice what they already know.

Good question!

I think students should be given homework to practice what they've learned during the day.

There isn't enough room on this blog to come to consensus on this question.

Our students work so hard in school that I'm not a big homework supporter. I think that they should use their afterschool time to exercise their big muscles and get fresh air.

I think they should have some homework. My problem is making it something both kids and parents understand. I find that if kids don't know what they are doing well enough to explain it to their parents, it's frustrating for all of us.

Kids should be asked to apply what they have learned in school to real life situations - it is a way to make learning real in real life.

Although kids often enjoy worksheets, they are not the most valuable homework!

Define useful homework....what's useful for one may not be for another.

Yes.... meaningful, valuable work that gets recognition and feedback the next day.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I agree with the Depends comment although I don't know what diapers have to do with the question.

Not necessarily every night.

Hi,
I like the idea of 10 minutes per grade level of homework. It allows us to add time to our all too short day. It gives students time to review and practice concepts learned that day.

That is an ongoing discussion. I think there should be homework and we try to have the amount be appropriate for the grade level. We do 10 minutes of Math in 1st grade that quickly reinforces the day's lesson and only Monday through Thursday.

yes, for practice of concepts, usually.

This is an ongoing personal debate for me. I STRONGLY believe that kids need time to be kids and to spend time with their families and friends in the afternoon/evenings, BUT some skills require independent practice. So, I guess, I'll go with the "if it's meaningful" response.

If they "practice" it incorrectly, they learn it incorrectly.

Definitely, I call it "Extended Learning", because it is continuing their learning.

Yes if there are clear expectations and strong communication with families (younger kids).

I co-teach second graders and give regular homework assignments twice a week. Our assignments either provide extra practice on a skill such as spelling or a fun activity to reinforce concepts in math or a content area such as science. We encourage our students to create their own extensions to the homework. We hope to develop self-directed learners. Most of our students enjoy the homework and their parents are encouraged to be involved in a supportive way. We have to provide extra help at school for those who do not have support at home. Tasks are designed to be completed in 15-30 minutes.
