There is a difference

Off the top of my head,a mathematical drill is an activity where students are given an algorithm or a skill and do it repeatedly, like memorize math facts. Practice is when they investigate a concept, play with it and then practice applying it to other mathematical situations. Perhaps practice is applying symbols to a concept and/or practicing it with paper and pencil.

I've send home cards (about the size of a card in a deck of cards) for students to practice facts.
On the front might be 2+3=5 and the back would show a number line with a jump (or arc) from 2 to 5. These cards are sent home so students can practice and have the facts become automatic in their brains. I would send them home after we have explored parts of 5. Cards include addition and subtraction facts. I see this as a way to practice or drill (acquisition of knowledge through repetitive practice). Students seemed to enjoy having cards to take home for practice. Sometimes they would use them with each other in the classroom. However, students who knew the facts didn't use them, unless they wanted to get faster. And some students were not able to acquire knowledge through this form of drill. They needed more work on number sense. I would give regular One Minute Tests weekly so students could see their improvement. Students kept their own graphs and were so happy when they got all 12(or when the class got all 12 in one minute).
